Inclement Weather and Schools Days Missed
(during the 2013-14 school year) Feb. 2014
Given the recent missed days of school due to inclement weather, there have been questions about the AASD school calendar and whether or not days of school need to be made up.  At this point in time, no school days need to be added to the 2013-14 school year at any level.  Our school calendar contains the recommended 180 days of school and the Department of Public Instruction (DPI) guidelines allow districts to use up to 5 days for inclement weather.  To date, we have used 3 of those 5 days so the AASD is still in compliance regarding required days of school.  DPI also has requirements for minutes of instruction for the school year.  The elementary and middle schools do not need to add any minutes to their school day at this time.  However, the high schools and several of our Community 4K classrooms will need to make up some of the missed time.  Options are being explored but we will wait until the end of February to determine what modifications need to be made at the high school and 4K levels to comply with DPI requirements for instructional minutes.  At this time, we do not anticipate that these modifications will result in adding days to the school calendar.  Please remember that we are still in the midst of the winter months.  Should there be a need to cancel additional school days due to inclement weather, we will be in touch with updated information.
